Freemasons’ Hall can feel imposing when you see it for the first time. It is an extraordinary building, the occasion matters, and it is perfectly natural to wonder whether everyone else will know exactly where to go and what to do.
The reassuring truth is that plenty of Brethren will be making their first visit too. You are not expected to know the building, and you will not be left to work it out alone.
If you are joining East Kent for the Provincial Grand Master’s Investiture on Friday 16 October 2026, your journey can be thought of in five simple steps.
1. Arrive
Before setting off, read your official joining information once more. Check your arrival time, travel plans, dress requirements, the entrance you have been asked to use and anything you need to bring. Keep those details somewhere easy to reach on your phone, or take a printed copy.
Allow a little extra time if you can. Arriving without a rush gives you a moment to take in the building and settle into the day.
2. Enter
Follow the entrance instructions you have been given. We’ll let you know but it will probably be the main ‘Tower’ entrance. Once you reach the door, the next step is simply to go in. Have your joining information or booking confirmation ready in case it is needed.
There will be people there to help. If you are uncertain, ask. No one will think twice about it.
3. Find us
You may spot a familiar East Kent face straight away. If you do not, tell a steward that you are attending with East Kent and ask where you should go next.
You do not need to know the layout or the correct route through the building. A straightforward “I have not been here before — could you point me in the right direction?” is all that is required.
4. Take your seat
Once you are inside, follow the directions you are given and make your way to your place. There is no advantage in pretending to know the way: asking early is the quickest route to feeling at home.
By this point, the unfamiliar part is already behind you. You have arrived, entered and found the East Kent party. Now you can settle in alongside other Brethren.
5. Enjoy the occasion
This is a significant day for the Province and a chance to share in a memorable occasion at Great Queen Street. You do not need to master the building or anticipate every part of the day. Be present, follow the guidance around you and enjoy the ceremony and the company.
A few final reassurances
- Travelling on your own does not mean being on your own when you arrive.
- Asking for directions is normal, especially in a building of this scale.
- Your official joining information is the final word on timings, dress, entrance and anything you need to bring.
